Preparing to become a mother is one of the most bizarre experiences of my life so far. From coming to terms with a rapidly changing body to being torn between feeling totally ready to welcome a newborn into our lives (and feeling anything BUT prepared), it really is a rollercoaster. As an expectant mum, figuring out the best new mum must-haves is often so far down on our list of priorities!
To help you out, I’ve spoken to some of my mum friends to gather their wisdom and insight together in one place. This post is all about things you REALLY need and want as a new mum – even ones you haven’t thought about before.
Working out what to buy a first-time mum is confusing, especially if you’ve not had kids of your own. As a first time parent, or a friend trying to work out what present new parents would appreciate the most, it can be a real headache.
So, let’s get cracking with our gift guide for new mums and expectant parents.
Psst! Make sure you save this post for later!
New Mum Must-Haves
This portable, colour-changing night light is designed to calmly soothe little ones as they drift off to sleep. It comes in the shape of an adorable penguin which just makes it perfect for any nursery!
Perfect to buy as a gift for a new baby or expectant mum if you don’t have a huge budget.
If you’re in the US, this polar bear night light is a great alternative.
If you’re shopping from Australia, click here to shop a cute little chick nightlight on Amazon AU.
Gone are the days of having to rely on dipping your elbow into the bathwater for bathtime. Placing a baby in water that is too hot is obviously a danger, but it can be hard to work out what is considered to be ‘too hot’ for a newborn – especially if you’re a new parent.
Another great affordable gift option, there are loads available for £10 or less.
If you’re shopping from the US, this is a great affordable option.
All my Australian mommas – take a look here for your best bet.
It goes without saying – babies need nappies. Plus, you can get some great bulk buy discounts through Amazon (linked to above).
A present of nappies will never be frowned upon, and it’s even better if you get a range of sizes.
No parent wants to experience the panic of going to get a fresh nappy and realising you’ve run out, but in the blurry days and weeks of new parent life, it’s easily done.
Same with above. Baby wipes are a staple newborn must-have item. And bonus points if you can get eco-friendly ones!
Life with a newborn can be chaotic, and finding time to tidy up is often a distant memory.
Having a nappy caddy or organiser is a great way to keep the essentials in one place, and helps new parents get the hang of those late-night nappy changes.

This was recommended by two of my mum friends – one also recommending ‘Weleda everything’!
Weleda do a range of gentle, natural toiletries for babies, including nappy rash cream, face and body cream, and bath lotion.
Plus, they do a great range of affordable toiletries for mums too, with nipple cream and perineum massage oil, amongst other products.

These necklaces are BPA free and made from silicon. Designed to be worn by mothers, they provide a safe item for baby to play with during feeding, and chew on when teething.
They come in a range of colours and prices, but many can be found for less than a tenner.

This nightlight also doubles up as a room thermometer, helping first-time parents easily work out what to dress their newborn in for bedtime.
The colours of the thermometer coincide with the tog ratings of Grobag sleeping bags, making it even easier for your newborn (and you) to get a comfortable nights’ sleep.
Almost every mum I spoke to stressed the importance of having a LOAD of muslin cloths!
Useful for burping, feeding, changing, snuggling and clearing up spills and spit-up, new parents will use more than one muslin a day in most circumstances.
You can get really basic muslins in a multipack, or if you want to stand out a little bit then why not get some pretty printed ones? You can never have too many muslins!
Get them from Amazon AU here.
Let’s face it – everyone wants to buy a new baby a cute new outfit. HOWEVER, before you head to the newborn section of the store, why not consider planning ahead instead?
New parents will be inundated with clothes in size ‘newborn’ and ‘0-3 month’. But we all know that babies grow (quickly), and some babies grow out of clothes for their age much earlier than anticipated.
Think outside the box and buy clothes for when the baby is a little bit older. Chances are, the child will get a lot more wear out of it, and the parents will be super grateful that someone planned for a growing baby!

Swaddles help babies adjust to life outside the womb by keeping them all snuggly and wrapped up – similar to how they’ve spent the last 9 months.
The Miracle Blanket Swaddle was recommended to me because they really help recreate that womb-like feeling for newborns. Plus, they can prevent reflux, and velcro swaddles are considered to be safer than most baby blankets.
They come in a range of prints, so go wild!
Check them out on Amazon AU here.
Before we started looking for things to buy for our baby, we hadn’t even considered the need for things like specially-made car seat blankets.
However, they make sense – the baby needs to wear the straps to be safe in the car seat, and blankets can sometimes make this tricky. Enter the car seat blanket, with gaps in the back to allow the straps to come through and keep the baby secure and warm.
It’s not an obvious one, so is a great choice of gift for a new mum if you want to make sure no one else will get the same present as you!
Baby-wearing is becoming more and more popular. With some beautiful brands offering stylish wraps to keep your baby close and allow you to be hands-free at the same time, it’s no surprise!
For me, these wraps will be perfect for when I start working again. It means I can ‘wear’ the baby whilst working from my laptop at home.

A Special Treat
These baby carriers are a popular choice for a reason. The ideal first baby carrier for a newborn, they are easy to use. Plus, they position the baby safely, ergonomically, and comfortably.
If stretchy wraps are just not for you, this is the next best thing. Plus, as they are a bit more substantial, you can keep the baby in it for longer; ideal for that Sunday afternoon countryside walk to the pub.

As we’ve explored already, babies like be snug.
This sleep pod is great for using in buggies, on planes, and on beds and sofas to avoid the baby rolling off. Plus, you can get changeable covers to match the interior of your home.
As with all sleep pods, it’s not advised that these are used without adult supervision.
Pamper Pack for New Mums
A lot of the products we’ve listed above are largely for baby – but what about gifts for mum?
Why not put together a little pamper pack? Fill it with useful toiletries, snacks, and beauty products to help the new mother feel more human again after childbirth. My top three suggestions are below:

Delivered Meals/Food Delivery Vouchers
New parents don’t prioritise feeding themselves. One of the best gifts for first-time parents is home-cooked meals that they can keep in their freezer and get out when needed. Things like lasagne, curry, soups, and casseroles work wonderfully for this.
If cooking isn’t your thing, why not purchase a voucher for a food-delivery service like Deliveroo and Uber Eats instead?
What to Buy a New Mum
Everybody wants to buy presents for a newborn, but often Mum gets a bit forgotten about.
Whilst our recommendations for new mum must-haves have included many baby items if you really want to win Brownie points then taking the time to work out what to buy a first-time mum will work wonders.
And, if money is really tight, one of the best things you can offer is free babysitting, cleaning, or cooking services.
